Tavern Clock- Moore - Ipswich - C.1775 | MAKER: "Moore" TOWN: Ipswich This black lacquered shield dial clock had been repainted prior to acquisition and on removing the top layer(s) it became evident that the signature had been lost, albeit under ultra-violet inspection there was a vestige of an "M". This is a very rare shield dial in that it has an original and correct very short trunk. In the Tavernicus archive there are only two other full sized shields with such a short trunk, namely by Moore of Ipswich and by John Wait of Wapping. The latter is decorated on the dial moulding and there was no evidence of anything similar. This clock has the Moore signature added and should be seen as "In the manner of....". The Moore family needs no introduction and is fully documented in the Haggar & Miller book on Suffolk clocks. Everything about the case of this clock is correct although there are the usual repairs that one finds in an 18thC tavern clock i.e. a replacement base and the side doors have been replaced at some time. The shield is pegged to the trunk with four thin metal pegs. The gilded finials are new and there is evidence that the clock originally had finials. The lacquer has been beautifully restored as has the gilding. The chinoiserie scene on the small door is original. This clock must be seen to be appreciated. The high quality A-plated movement has 5-pillars and has a 5-wheel train. The second wheel has a very large brass pinon. A totally correct and typical tavern clock movement for this period. The brass hands are probably original with the usual repairs. Notwithstanding the short trunk the pendulum has space to move freely; it has a brass covered lead filled bob. The run time is 7 days and 7 hours on its new wedge shaped weight. The rectangular lead weight in the gallery is a temporary one.The restoration of the movement has been carried out by an FBHI.
