Tavern Clock by Harris Keninghall
Tavern Clock - John Harris - Keninghall - c.1780

MAKER:   John Harris

TOWN:      Keninghall

John Harris is listed as a Norfolk maker in the regional book by Clifford & Yvonne Bird with the small town having two "n's" whereas this clock is signed correctly in the spelling of the time with one. Harris worked around 1780 and is known to have made a lacquered "Act of Parliament" clock for the nearby Gissing Hall. Unfortunately, the current owners of the Hall took on the property without any contents so it is not possible to say whether this is the same clock.

The clock has been restored. The dial and trunk are original with replacement ears and base, as is so often the case. The chinoiserie lacquerwork has been carefully conserved and restored where necessary.  All but the door gilding was evident and has been retouched. The door had only shadows of the original work. The dial has been re-done as it was overpainted. Importantly, the signature  is correct and original.

The good quality movement is original and has 5-pillars and a 5-wheel train and the solid brass hands are also original with repairs. The pendulum is a replacement and the weight is correct. The original lock has a replacement key. The movement has been restored by an FBHI.

This clock has been sympathetically restored and would make a wonderful feature in any drawing room or hall.
