TAVERN CLOCK BY JAMES DOUGLASS
Tavern Clock-James Douglass Chertsey c.1770

MAKER:   James Douglass
TOWN:     Chertsey

James Douglass is listed in Baillie as working in Chertsey between 1768-91

Douglass had the misfortune of being declared bankrupt and was one in a long line of clockmakers.

The case has been restored and the laquerwork carefully conserved. The restoration revealed original gilded decoration which has been restored. The restoration of the japanning is particularly restrained so as to preserve the "leathered" effect of the japan on the dial. This is a collector's clock. The door lock is original. The base moulding was replaced as were the side inspection doors. The latter were missing and the base had been replaced previously with plywood following a gut failure.

Movement is an A-Plated four pillar , five-wheel train, reverse wind. The anchor has been replaced, and the motion work corrected. A very classic tavern movement, fully serviced with minor restorations by an FBHI. Movement runs 8 days

The shield dial is secured with wooden pegs to the case and there are two leather hinged side access doors. The winding hole is offset from the central arbour and it is as certain as it can be that that the movement is therefore original as the vast majority of tavern clocks have in-line central and winding arbours. There is no adaptation on the back of the dial.

Hands are of cut brass and are either original or contemporary.

A contemporary pair of finials are now shown in the photo, albeit loosely attached, which could be made permanent.  H58in. W30in.
